Mount Sinjar Air Force Base

Mount Sinjar Air Force Base

Everyone knows that the US should have kept a base *somewhere* in IRAQ. I propose that we build an airbase near Mount Sinjar. It is at a crossroads of an important highway (links to the major city of Mosul). It is also close the the Kurds, which helped retake the town of Sinjar.

The base could be USA only, but it makes more sense to make it a NATO/UN (split base - share runways). NATO's mission would be to patrol the skies and defend the countryside. The UN base would be charged with protection of the local inhabitants (many non-Shiite religions) and bringing in relief supplies and medicine.

The town of Sinjar and its surroundings will be rebuilt and the Yazidi people resettled. The surrounding villages will also be rebuilt (including Christian areas). NATO will be responsible for their safety.

Russians save the day in Syria?

Russia could be the good guys that come into Syria as true peacekeepers (maybe a UN force?). Their job would be to secure the Army in their barracks and function as the command structure (along with a Syrian adjutant for each position). They would also
  1. Be responsible in military use of force as Peacekeepers (a professional Army). It should take at least 2 Divisions (I would send 4).
  2. Provide security for ALL U.N. activities including medical and relief supplies (Maybe use CIS allies to do this - Krygs?).
  3. A second country (Egypt?) would be responsible for ALL civilian policing, again with Syrian adjutants.
  4. This second country would also be responsible for securing the Syrian Air Force bases (and Navy if there is one) plus troops in barracks along with any other missile forces, etc.
  5. The court system would be replaced (initially) with respected Arab leaders (retired generals,politicians,etc.). And a promise that EVERY SYRIAN VOICE WOULD BE HEARD - and EVERY CRIME ADMITTED TO by the (still living) Syrian government officials.
  6. All Syrian government officials would be given the choice to testify in front of a Tribunal (that has investigative powers only - not prosecution) in exchange for freedom (would need a "Witness Protection Plan" to protect some of them). Anyone that declines to testify would be referred to the International Court of Justice in the Hague or a local court (depending on the severity of the crimes). See http://Tarebalance.blogspot.com
  7. All Europian countries (this includes Turkey) would accept (temporary) Syrian refugees while the UN employes as many able-bodied Syrian men as they can, to tear down and rebuild their communities in Syria.
  8. America sends troops to lead the pincer move on ISIS. Use a coalition of Kurds, Iraqi's, Iranians and or Saudis. Once Russia and the USA crush ISIS completely, America sets up a (air) base in that area (on the Iraqi side of the border).
  9. Assad goes from bad guy to good guy by signing the Treaty of Detroit (tD) setting up the framework for Peace in the Middle East (http://architectforpeace.blogspot.com), and getting the 2016 Nobel Peace Prize perhaps sharing with Putin. I see a very nice Dacha in his future retirement in Russia.
